Getting a hearing test shouldn't mean fighting traffic, hunting for parking, or sitting in a waiting room. For people managing mobility challenges, tight schedules, or transportation barriers, an in-home hearing test is simply the better option. It's also, for most patients, the more comfortable one.
At Professional Hearing Services, we've offered mobile audiology care since 1992. Here's exactly what happens when one of our audiologists comes to you.
We Start by Getting to Know You
Before any equipment comes out, your audiologist sits down for a real conversation. We want to understand your life, not just your ears.
We'll talk through the situations where you're struggling most. Is it family dinners? Phone calls? Watching TV at a volume that bothers everyone else in the room? We'll also ask about your daily routines, relevant medical history, and whether hearing loss runs in your family.
This matters more than people expect. Hearing loss shows up differently depending on how you spend your time, and understanding your lifestyle shapes everything that follows.
A Quick Look Inside Your Ears
Next, your audiologist will use a small handheld light called an otoscope to look into your ear canal and check your eardrum. It's quick and completely painless.
We're also looking for earwax buildup, which is more common than most people realize and can actually affect your test results. If we find significant buildup, we can usually take care of it during the same visit so there's no need for a separate appointment.
How the Hearing Test Works
This is the part people sometimes feel nervous about — and there's no reason to be. The testing is painless, non-invasive, and takes about 20 to 30 minutes.
We use headphones designed to meet the same noise standards used in clinical settings. Most homes are quiet enough for accurate results, so the quality of the evaluation isn't compromised just because we're not in a soundproof booth.
Your test will typically include three components:
- Pure tone testing — You'll indicate when you hear tones at different pitches and volumes. This maps out which frequencies you're missing.
- Speech recognition testing — You'll repeat words back to us, which shows how well you're understanding speech, not just detecting sound.
- Bone conduction testing — A small device placed behind your ear helps us identify what type of hearing loss is present, if any.
- Each piece gives us a clearer picture of what's going on.
Understanding Your Results
Your audiologist records your results on an audiogram — a simple graph showing how well you hear across different sound frequencies. We'll walk you through it in plain language.
By the end, you'll know whether hearing loss is present, what type it is, and how significant it is. If anything in your results suggests a medical issue that needs further attention, we'll refer you to the right provider.
Your Options If Hearing Loss Is Found
Finding hearing loss doesn't mean leaving with a pamphlet and a follow-up appointment three weeks out. Your audiologist will walk through treatment options that actually fit your hearing profile, lifestyle, and communication needs — right there at your kitchen table.
Hearing aids are the most common solution. We carry devices from major manufacturers including Phonak, Oticon, Starkey, Signia, Widex, Resound, and Unitron. Because we're an independent practice, our recommendations are based entirely on what works best for you — not on brand loyalty or sales quotas.
If hearing aids are the right fit, we can take custom earmold impressions the same day and schedule a follow-up fitting. Fittings, programming, and adjustments can all happen in your home. You never have to come to us if you don't want to.
