Getting new hearing aids is the start of a long relationship with your devices. Over time, they need cleaning, fine-tuning, the occasional repair, and a professional look at the ears they sit in. At Professional Hearing Services, our Lakewood office at 2405 Wadsworth Blvd. handles all of this care, whether you purchased your hearing aids from us or somewhere else.
Programming Adjustments That Keep Up With Your Hearing
Hearing aids work best when their settings match your hearing loss, your ears, and the way you live. Our audiologists, Dr. Jeff Baller, Dr. Mary-Todd Moseley, Dr. Seth King, and Dr. Anna Palmer, are all Doctors of Audiology with experience fitting many brands and styles of hearing aids. When we program your devices, we look beyond your test results to factors like the shape and size of your ear canal, your dexterity, and your personal preferences.
Hearing can change gradually, so we recommend a follow-up visit every six months to a year for a hearing test and any needed adjustments. When we detect small changes in your hearing, we fine-tune your hearing aids to match. In some cases, we'll need a hearing test from within the last six months before reprogramming, so the new settings are based on accurate results. We're also glad to program hearing aids that were purchased elsewhere, a service not every practice offers.
Fitting Follow-Ups After You Start Wearing Hearing Aids
The first weeks with new hearing aids are an adjustment period. New devices from our office come with a 30-day trial period that begins the day you receive them, which gives you time to wear them through your daily routine and tell us what's working and what needs attention.
At a follow-up visit, we check how your hearing aids fit in or behind your ear, whether the amplification is right for your degree of hearing loss, and how comfortably you move from one listening environment to another. If small controls or battery changes are a struggle, we can talk through options like automatic features, rechargeable models, and better-fitting earmolds. Caregivers are welcome to join, and we're happy to show them how to clean the devices, put them in and take them out, and change batteries.
Cleaning and Routine Maintenance
Earwax, moisture, and debris collect on hearing aids with daily wear, and some styles worn in the ear gather more wax than others. A professional cleaning in our office helps keep the microphone, speaker, and vent openings clear so your devices perform at their best.
Between visits, a few simple habits help extend the life of your hearing aids:
- Remove them before applying makeup, hair spray, sun lotion, perfume, or aftershave
- Clean them with a soft cloth and use a hearing aid brush to clear debris from the openings
- Store them in a cool, dry place when you're not wearing them
- Check for blockages and replace the wax filter if the sound seems weak or cuts out
In-Office Repairs and Manufacturer Repairs
Feedback, interrupted sound, a less comfortable fit, or visible damage are all signs that your hearing aid needs attention. Many hearing aid repairs can be handled right in our office, including tubing replacement, deep cleaning, and modifications.
Some problems need the manufacturer's repair facility, such as cracked or missing pieces or a failed sound component. In those cases, we send the hearing aid to the manufacturer for you, which we can do for most major brands. If your devices are still under warranty, the cost of a repair is likely to be small. We can repair most hearing aids, with the exception of devices from Costco, NuEar, Miracle Ear, and Beltone.
Earwax Removal With the Earigator
Wearing hearing aids can cause earwax to build up in your ears, and a blockage in the ear canal can affect your hearing. We offer professional earwax removal with the Earigator, a system that uses controlled water temperature and pressure to clean the ears gently and thoroughly. It's a much safer choice than trying to clear wax at home with cotton swabs or other objects.
